LIBRARY ON MONDAY 2/1/16

LIBRARY ON MONDAY 2/1/16
Next week, Pre-K "A" will head to the library this coming Monday (2/1/16) instead of next Wednesday.  Please have your child return his/her library book this Monday.
 Thanks!

FANTASTIC FRIDAY 1-29-16

ASK ME ABOUT...
...the passwords we found in our Morning Message.
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what we did with our 2nd grade buddies.
...what we did in P.E.
...the story, There's No Place Like Space.

 ~MORNING MESSAGE~
We found many of our passwords in today's Morning Message.  Then, we searched for passwords that are hidden inside of other words.  Ask your child to show you the words we found using the photo below.

 ~OUTER SPACE~
Today we read a factual book about Outer Space in "Dr. Seuss rhyme".
 "BOOK IN A BAG"
We have heard positive feedback from the Pre-K children after our first week of "Book In A Bag".  After a child reads his/her "Book In A Bag" to a teacher at the end of the week, he/she places it in a "We Can Read!" basket in the Book Nook.  The children can then read their book to classmates.

~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was a cooking day and we made yogurt pops!  Using vanilla yogurt, chocolate chips, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries, children created their own yogurt pop.  The yogurt pops have been placed in the freezer and we will enjoy eating them on Monday!

THRILLING THURSDAY 1-28-16

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS CAME HOME IN FOLDERS TODAY (THURSDAY).

 ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what I did in Music/Drama.
...what I did in Spanish.
...the story, Me And My Place in Space.

~OUTER SPACE~
Today we asked the children to share with the group what they know about Outer Space.  Their knowledge is quite impressive!  Then, we read a book called, Me And My Place In Space.  This is the official start of our study of Outer Space!

~EXTENDED DAY~
Here is an explanation of the Second Step lesson children did with Mr. Cross...

In Second Step, we look at two cards and we acted out some emotions. One card showed a little boy that could have been sad, scared, or even bored. We decided that he could be any of these things because we looked at his face and his body for clues. We then talked about why he might feel each of those ways. There were so many great thoughts.

The next picture was a picture that showed the same little boy but we saw other kids in the distance where he was looking. This made the picture whole. Now we saw the reason, but it still wasn't clear what was happening. We talked about why he might feel sad, scared, or bored with people in the distance. Some responses stayed the same but others changed because of this new piece of information.

As we often do, we showed emotions using our faces. However, this time we said them in Spanish! It was a fun twist one something we do often.

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 1-27-16

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...the story Heartprints.
...what a heartprint is.
...what we played in P.E.
...my 100th day homework.
...how many more school days until the 100th day of school!
~NEW WORK STATIONS~
Following are 2 more of the new Work Stations we introduced and did today.
At Games Galore, children play a memory game with passwords that we have had.

At Math Magic, children are working with math manipulatives called Tangrams.
Using the pieces in the above photo, children fill in the figures on the cards below.  With each card, there are less clues given as to where each piece fits.

In the Construction Zone, children work together to build a structure they see on a card using wood pieces.

~FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
Today we "painted" with snow paint (glue and shaving cream mixed together).  The children enjoyed this creative, sensory activity!

Today we read a story called Heartprints.  Heartprints are kind words and acts you do toward others.  After the story, we discussed words and acts that leave us with sad "heartprints".  We wrote down the ideas on a heart with an unhappy face and then wrinkled up this heart.  When we "unwrinkled" it, you could still see the wrinkles symbolizing what happens to us when someone is unkind to us.  Then, on a heart with a happy face, we wrote down ways to make others have a happy "heartprint".   Finally, the children were shown containers that are available in our classroom filled with "heartprints".  If/when someone does or says something kind to you, you can give that person a "heartprint" and tell him/her what he/she did that left you with a happy "heartprint".

~HIP HIP HOORAY!  IT'S ALMOST THE 100TH DAY!~
Pictured below is a note and a bag that your child is bringing home this evening in his/her folder.  It explains some "homework" we would like for the children to do in preparation for the 100th day of school next week.  We are very excited!!!

~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was an Art Day!  Be sure to ask your child to share with you what he/she did in Art class today.

TERRIFIC TUESDAY 1-26-16

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what we learned about the American flag at Assembly.
...what we did with Mrs. Arner in the library.
...what book I checked out from the library.
...showing you what I have learned about tally marks.

~NEW ADDITION ACTIVITY~
Yesterday, we introduced a "hands-on" addition activity.

Children choose a problem....
Next, they use concrete objects on the ten-frames to represent the addition problem.
Finally, the problem and solution are written on a recording sheet.

~TALLY MARKS~
Today we reviewed what we have learned about tally marks.
In the photo below, there are 12 straws.  Children were asked to look at the straws and determine what it should look like using tally marks.

~NEW WORK STATIONS~
Tomorrow we will begin a new set of work stations.

At the Fine Motor Station, children will choose one the snowmen pictured below and draw the other 1/2.
At the Construction Zone, work station partners will be assigned a structure to build using small wood pieces.

At the Alphabet Station, children will draw and label two pictures that begin with the /U/ sound.
At the Writing Station, children will practice writing their first and last names using the appropriate upper and lower case letters.
Each child has a name card showing how his/her name should look with the appropriate upper and lower case letters.  These name cards are hung at the children's cubbies for them to use when needed.

Today was a Technology Day.  Children worked on the I-pads, practicing their patterning skills.
