WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 4-30-14

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what I did in Spanish.
...how many days we've been in school.

ZERO THE HERO~ 
Today we celebrated our 150th day of school!  Noah and his mom helped us celebrate by providing us with materials to make Zero the Hero crowns!  Thank you for a fun activity!
 STAR OF THE WEEK~
Noah is our new "Star of the Week"!  In addition to sharing his photos, we learned that Noah's favorite things include orange and green (favorite colors), Chipotle (favorite restaurant), and COSI and the farm (favorite places to visit).  We enjoyed getting to know you better, Noah!
 HATTIE AND THE FOX~
Today, the children were assigned to draw pictures of either the setting, the character, the problem, or the solution from the story, Hattie and the Fox.  The finished drawings will be displayed on the bulletin board outside of our classroom.

TERRIFIC TUESDAY 4-29-14

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.

...the names of our new caterpillars.


 LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY~
Today we named our caterpillars.  Each child had the opportunity to submit a name idea for the caterpillars.  We wrote down each name, put all the names in a basket, and the Friendly Frog chose 3 of the names.  Our caterpillars' names are Snickers, Sabrina, and Cookie Monster.  The photo below shows a graph we are keeping to document and chart our caterpillars' growth as they go through the stages of the life cycle.

FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
Vivian, Emily and Kyndal worked together at the Discovery Station on a sorting task.  They sorted the objects 2 different ways.



 Using magnifying glasses to investigate our caterpillars.


Last week read the story Hattie and the Fox.  This week we are going to discuss and draw pictures of the characters, the problem, the setting, and the solution in this story.  Our work will be displayed on the bulletin board outside of our classroom.
 

 
 
 

CHAPTER BOOK~
Today we started reading the book, Charlotte's Web.  We will continue reading this story for the rest of the school year.

BIRTHDAY!~
Today we helped Mrs. "B" celebrate her April birthday!  The children gave Mrs. "B" a vase filled with "handprint tulips"!  We ate yummy donuts for Mrs. "B"'s birthday treat!  Happy Birthday, Mrs. "B"!

MARVELOUS MONDAY 4-28-14

STORY~
Mrs. Spolter found a new Mo Willems book this weekend!  Today we read the story, The Pigeon Needs a Bath!  This became a very popular book in the Book Nook today!



BIRTHDAY~
 Today we helped Avery celebrate his April birthday.  Avery's mom read the story, Pete The Cat, Play Ball.  We then ate candy sushi for Avery's birthday treat!  Happy Birthday, Avery!

CATERPILLARS~
Today we welcomed 3 live caterpillars into our classroom!  The children were very excited to meet the newest members of our class.  Over the next few weeks, we will observe these caterpillars as they grow, spin into a chrysalis and emerge as butterflies.  Tomorrow, we will name our caterpillars and start charting their growth and changes on a graph.

FANTASTIC FRIDAY 4-25-14

HANDWRITING~
We have finished with the upper case letters and are now moving on to learning how to correctly write numbers!
 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!~
Today we helped Vivian celebrate her birthday!  Vivian's mom read the story, Froggy Bakes A Cake.  Then, we ate yummy brownies for Vivian's birthday treat.  Happy Birthday, Vivian!

 EARTH DAY~
In celebration of Earth Day, we watched a short video and discussed what it means to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.   The link to the video is below if you would like to watch it with your child at home.

Our room was very colorful today to help celebrate Earth Day!
These children wore yellow to represent the the sun and clean air.
 This group wore blue to represent the oceans, lakes, rivers and streams.
 This group, wearing green, represented the trees, plants and grass.

THRILLING THURSDAY 4-14-14

VISITOR~
Today was Trustee Day at Academy.  One of the trustees, Ms. Restrepo, spent the day in our classroom.  Vivian and Laken served as hosts for Ms. Restrepo.  All the children enjoyed showing Ms. Restrepo what we do in Pre-K.   They even asked her to come back tomorrow! 

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!~
We helped Noah celebrate his birthday!  Noah' mom and sister, Hannah, read the story, Knuffle Bunny.  Then, we ate yummy sugar cookies for Noah's birthday treat.  Happy Birthday, Noah!

TERRIFIC TUESDAY 4-22-14

ASK ME ABOUT...

RHYME TIME~
We have put together a class book (2 copies) of the rhyming objects the children brought in to share!  Your child will bring home the book to share with you for one evening.  Please be sure to help your child remember to return the book to school the next day to pass on to another classmate.     
 FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
We have added binoculars and observation sheets for use in the Dramatic Play Butterfly Garden.
 At the Sensory Tub, children can create a flower arrangement.  When finished, the child can put the arrangement anywhere in the classroom.


STORY TIME~
Today we introduced the story, Hattie and the Fox.  Before reading the story, we did a "picture walk" through the book to discuss the illustrations and make predictions about what the story may be about.   We will continue to do further activities with this story.  Stay tuned!
 STAR OF THE WEEK~
Our "Star of the Week" is Carsyn!  Today we learned that Carsyn's favorite things include pink and purple (favorite colors); California Pizza Kitchen (favorite restaurant); and a zebra (favorite animal).  Thank you for helping us get to know you better, Carsyn!

HANDWRITING~
Children learned and practiced writing the letter "Z" today in their handwriting books. 
 YUMMY/YUCKY ACTIVITY~
During Free Choice today, children participated in a small group tasting activity.  Children had the opportunity to taste avocado, matzoh, hard-boiled egg, star fruit, and fresh coconut.  After tasting each item, children indicated on a chart if they thought the food was yucky or yummy.  Many children were surprised that they liked some of the new foods they tasted!
