THRILLING THURSDAY 11-14-13

...who we watched at Lower School Assembly this morning.
...what I did in P.E.
...what I did in Spanish.
...playing the "straw game" at calendar.
...the book, Tell Me About Your Day Today.
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...playing the game, "Bug In A Rug".

WRITER'S WORKSHOP~
We read the story called, Tell Me About Your Day Today, by Mem Fox.  This story was a great example of the details you include when telling a story...the who, the what, the why, and the how.  Next week, during Writer's Workshop, the children will begin drawing pictures in their own "Drawing and Writing Book" of an event, happening, etc. in their own lives.  Children will use their individual knowledge and abilities to write labels or sentences to describe their picture (phonetic spelling is acceptable and encouraged).

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 11-13-13

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what book Mrs. Arner read to us at the library.
...what book I checked out from the library.
...what letter we practiced writing.
...the math activity we did without any numbers.

NEW WORK STATIONS~
Yesterday, we started a new set of Work Stations.  Following are the "must do" tasks.

At the Writing Station, children "write" the passwords in colored sand.

At the Overhead Station, children do a word find, locating classmates' names.
At Math Magic, there are 2 different activities.
The photos below show a "Target Number" activity.  Using 10 cubes, children determine different ways to add 2 amounts together to get the number 10.

The other activity at Math Magic is Yahtzee.  Children roll the dice, count or add the dots, and then record it on their sheet.

At the SMARTBoard, children are working on rhyming, isolating and identifying beginning or ending sounds in words, and determining how many syllables are in a word.
HANDWRITING~
Children practice the correct formation of the letter "H".
PROBLEM SOLVING ACTIVITY~
Today we introduced a new "math" activity to the children.  At first, they were a little confused as they didn't see any numbers.  We explained that this was a problem solving activity.
In the photo below, you see 5 animals.  The pets belong to 1 child, who took her pets to a pet fair to compete in a contest.   One of the pets won first prize.  Using clues (and process of elimination), the children were able to determine which pet won the prize!

In the photo below, there are 5 girls, one of which is a sister to the "main character" in our problem.  In order to determine which girl is her sister, the children listened to clues.
We have some great thinkers in Pre-K "A"!

BIRTHDAY~
We helped Harper celebrate her upcoming November birthday!  Harper's dad read a great guessing book about dinosaurs.  Then, the children enjoyed dinosaur cookies, pineapple, and strawberries for Harper's birthday treat.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARPER!!

MARVELOUS MONDAY 11-11-13

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what I did in Spanish.
...the new activities during Free Choice time.
...what I did with my 2nd grade buddies.
...what we learned about veterans.
...the veteran graph we made.
...the new password.
...our new "Star of the Week", Kyndal!

FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
Geoboards are now available at the Fine Motor Station.  Children use rubber bands and stretch them on to the pegs of the geoboard to make shapes, designs, etc.

Also available at the Fine Motor Station are nuts and bolts.  Children determine which nut and bolt fit together.
Children can read this poem about pizza in the Book Nook.  The names and pizza toppings can change.
Children can practice matching upper and lower case letters at the Alphabet Station.

There are colored pebbles now available for counting in the counting basket.

VETERAN'S DAY~
To learn more about Veteran's Day, we read a simple story and then made a graph of our family members who have served in the military.

SPANISH~
We did an activity in Spanish to practice color words in Spanish.

 BUDDIES~
We met with our buddies today!  Ask your child to share with you what we did!

 STAR OF THE WEEK~
Our new "Star of the Week" is Kyndal!  We learned that some of Kyndal's favorite things include:  yellow (favorite color); ice cream (favorite dessert); and Disney (favorite place to visit).  Thank you for showing us your photos and sharing about yourself with us, Kyndal!

COLOR DAY 11-8-13

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what I did in P.E.
...what we ate and drank for snack.
...the graph we did.
...sharing the mixing color page I did.
...the story, My Many Colored Days.
...our ice cube experiment.

COLOR DAY~
We started Color Day by having the children mix food coloring into cake batter.  We then used the colored cake batter to make a special Color Day snack!

We had a very colorful snack with rainbow cupcakes, green water, and blue or yellow milk!

We read a story by Dr. Seuss called, My Many Colored Days.  The children were surprised that this story was by Dr. Seuss.  We also named/discussed other books by this author.

Our math activity for Color Day was graphing Skittles!
Children reviewed what they learned about primary colors mixing together to make secondary colors.

We continued our ice cube experiment that we started yesterday.  Children were able to observe the ice cubes melting throughout the morning.  At the end of our morning......

...we discovered what color the melted ice cubes became.

FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
Today children put finishing touches on items for the Dramatic Play Pizza Place we will "open" next week.  Children worked on illustrating the menu, making signs, and finishing some decorations.

The name of the pizza place is, "Fiesta" (spelled phonetically by the children, "Fetu").
 HANDWRITING~
The children practiced making rectangles with 2 big lines and 2 little lines.
