WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 2-3-16

ASK ME ABOUT...
...our 100th Day "work stations".
...my 100th Day snack!
...our story about the 100th day.
...guessing which jar had 100 objects.
...my favorite part of the 100th day!

 ~HIP HIP HOORAY--IT'S THE 100TH DAY!~

We had a packed, fun-filled morning celebrating the 100th day of school!

During Calendar, we counted 10 single yellow cubes and traded then in for a green 10-rod.  We added this 10-rod to the 9 ten-rods we already have and it made 100!  We traded in the ten 10-rods for 1 blue flat--that has 100 squares!

~100TH DAY "WORK STATIONS"~
Using the mat pictured below, children counted the 100 objects they brought in by putting the objects into 10 groups of 10.

We are making a class book about the number 100.  Children decided if they could have 100 of anything what they would choose.  They then drew a picture of the item.

Children worked with a partner to make a paper chain with 10 links.  We had 10 partner groups which makes 100 links.  We will put together the ten 10-link chains tomorrow.

With a partner, children tried to stack 100 pennies.

Zero the Hero came to visit and even had the number 100 on the back of his cape!

Our bags of 100  items are displayed on our classroom bulletin board.

Here are all the number 100's children found at home.
 ~OUR 100TH DAY STORY~
 ~100TH DAY SNACK~
Using 10 different foods, children counted 10 pieces of each food to fill the 10-frames on their paper.  Once it was filled, there were 100 pieces of food for the children to eat!

 ~ESTIMATION JARS~
During Free Choice time, children were asked to look at 3 jars that were the same size but were filled with different items.  Children had do decide which jar they thought had the 100 items.

After Free Choice, we counted the objects in each jar.  Jar #3 had 80 Legos.

We even had a little time for Free Choice today.  Samantha, Sydney, Lyndon and Max worked cooperatively to put together this Space puzzle.

 ~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Since today was the 100th day of school, we played a game called, "Race To 100" on the SMARTBoard.

TERRIFIC TUESDAY 2-2-16

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...how many more days until the 100th day of school!
...what I did in Music/Drama.
...what letters I learned and practiced writing.
...what I learned about the Moon.
...the Moon journal we are doing.
...the snowman made of ice we watched melt today.
...the 3 different forms of water (liquid (water), solid (ice), steam (gas)).

~SOLID, LIQUID AND GAS~
Today we did an observable experiment with the 3 different forms of water.  We started with a snowman made out of ice (solid).  Next, we watched the snowman as it melted throughout the morning and changed into water (liquid).  Finally, we put the melting snowman into an electric skillet where we observed the 3rd form of water--steam.

 ~HANDWRITING~
Today we learned and practiced writing the upper case letters "O" and "Q".

 ~OUTER SPACE~
Today we read a book about the Moon and introduced a Moon journal that we are going to be doing.  Every child will take home the Moon journal for one evening and record what the Moon looks like.

~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was a Swimming Day!  Once again, we heard positive feedback from Mrs. Moore and Mr. Yakscoe about the performance and growth they observe in the Pre-K students.

~FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
Max and Sally enjoy new Space books in the Book Nook.
Camille searches the room looking for words for the "Write the Room" activity.
Samantha and Shand count the hearts in the counting basket.  We even had to get out the chart with numbers to 200!

Max and Alex work cooperatively to put together a new Space puzzle.

 ~HANDWRITING~
Today we reviewed and practiced writing the upper case letters--T, I, C and U.

 ~CALENDAR~
The month of February has arrived!  Ask your child to share with you how many days are in the month of February and some of the events marked on our February calendar.

~STAR OF THE WEEK~
Samantha is the new "Star of the Week"!  Today we learned that Samantha's favorite things include:  purple (favorite color); lollipops (favorite dessert); and New York City (favorite place to visit).  Samantha also shared her diving trophy with the class.  Thank you for helping us get to know you better, Samantha!

 ~OUTER SPACE~
Today we read a book about day and night, including how the Earth spins, how the Earth travels around the Sun, and how the Moon travels around the Earth.  We did a simulation of this using students.  Be sure to ask your child...
...how long it takes the Earth to spin one time.
...how long it takes the Moon to travel around the Earth.
...how long it takes the Earth to travel around the Sun.

 ~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today we discussed what happens to an animal's body when it is hibernating and the differences between hibernating and sleeping.  We watched a short video clip explaining these ideas and also listened to and watched a reading of the story, Bear Snores On.  We also discussed how animals' bodies stay warm in the Winter--by eating a lot of food which stores up fat in their bodies.  To demonstrate how this works, we had the children put one hand into a plastic baggie and the other hand into a plastic bag lined with "lard".  The children then placed their "baggied" hands into bowls of ice cold water.  The hand in the baggie with the lard didn't feel cold but the hand in the other plastic baggie did get cold.

We enjoyed the yogurt pops that we made last Friday for today's snack!
