TERRIFIC TUESDAY 4-7-15

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what I did in Spanish.
...the new Work Stations.
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what I did in Music.
...the book, Floating In Space.
...tasting astronaut ice cream.
...watching an astronaut at the International Space Station show us how he sleeps.
NEW WORK STATIONS~
We introduced new Work Stations today.  Below is a description of each...

At the Writing Station, children will practice writing their first and last names (using appropriate upper and lower case letters).

At the Lily Pad, children will practice their spatial reasoning skills on Geoboards.  Using a card, children recreate the shape on the card on to the Geoboard.

At Math Magic, children work on a number line.  Beginning with numbers 1 through 10, children cut apart the numbers (see picture below) and then....
...glue them in correct numerical order.
The children then move on to the next ten numbers--11 through 20.  Once those numbers have been cut apart and put in order, the children move on to the next ten numbers--21 through 30.   This is as far as children are required to go.  However, children can continue, putting numbers in order up to 100!
At the Alphabet Station, children create a rhyming flip book.
The first picture is a mouse.  Children are to think of something that rhymes with mouse and then....
...draw it on the inside.  Children are also asked to label their pictures using inventive spelling.
At the Discovery Station, children create a rocket that they can make fly!

OUTER SPACE~
Today we read a book about astronauts and how they survive when they are in Outer Space--on a space shuttle or living at the International Space Station.
We tasted astronaut ice cream!  Ask your child how it is different from ice cream we eat on Earth.

After we sample astronaut ice cream, we watched two short video clips of astronauts in Outer Space.

The video pictured below was astronauts walking on the Moon.
The astronaut pictured below demonstrated how and where he sleeps on the International Space Station.

WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD~
You should have received a note (pictured below) in your child's folder today.  Please read over the note which asks you to complete the bottom portion and return to school by Monday, April 13th.  On Friday, April 17th, we are inviting Pre-K parents to enjoy a morning snack with your child to start our day.

OUTER SPACE~
Today we read 2 books about Pluto, learning some characteristics of this dwarf planet and why it is no longer a planet.  (Pluto is not round but rather an oval shape and does not have its own orbit path.  It shares one with Neptune.)  The first story we read about Pluto was written by a class of 3rd grade students in California.

 FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
This past Friday, the Extended Day Pre-K class made galaxy playdough.  We put some of this at the Fine Motor Station along with some Outer Space objects.

At Games Galore, children can play a game of "Go Fish" using Outer Space cards.  Instead of saying go fish, the players say, "Blast Off!" when someone needs to choose a card from the pile.

ZERO THE HERO~
Today was the 130th day of school!  To help us celebrate, Anna and her mom brought in supplies for us to make a card with flower on the front in the shape of a zero.  Not only did they enjoy making the card, but the children also liked deciding to whom they would give the card and what to write inside!  Thanks for a fun activity!

EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was Technology Day!  Children worked on the laptop computers doing math and language activities from abcya.com
