WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 11-5-14

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what book Mrs. Arner read to us at the library.
...what book I checked out from the library.
...new activities during Free Choice time.
...looking through a prism to see a rainbow.
...what letter I learned and practiced writing today.
...what letter sound we discussed.
...what we used to decorate letter "L".
...what two friends in our class have a name that begins with /L/.
...what I learned about the celebration of Diwali.

"LITTLE MISS MUFFET"~
During Free Choice, children can act out the nursery rhyme, "Little Miss Muffet".
 (or "Little Mister Muffet".)

Anna works on forming the letters at the Alphabet Station using Wikki sticks.
At the Fine Motor Station, Mitch and Gabriel build with tiny Legos.

Anna and Spencer were busy building in the Construction Zone today.

Graham filled in numbers 1 through 100 on the number board, using number tiles.

 HANDWRITING~
Children learned and practiced writing letter "C" today.

 COLORS~
Yesterday we read about prisms in our book about rainbows.  Today, children took turns looking for the rainbow in the prism.
 LETTER SOUNDS~
Today we did a lesson on the letter sound /L/.  We then decorated the letter "L" with letters!
 DIVALI~
Rubina's mom visited our class today to share about celebrating the holiday of Divali.  She shared information about the holiday with books, pictures, clothing, jewelry and diyas.  The diyas are special lamps that are lit during Diwali.  Your child brought home a diya today to decorate and keep.  Thank you for teaching us more about Divali!

 EXTENDED DAY~
After lunch, we went to visit our tree and noticed it looks a little different than last time.  There are hardly any leaves left on the tree.  The leaves that are still on the tree are green but turning yellow.  We all predicted that the next time we visit the tree, there will be no leaves on it!

  EMPATHY TRAINING~
Today we discussed appropriate ways to ask to use/play with something that another child is using.  The children did a great job brainstorming ideas!  We encouraged the children to use these ideas during Free Choice time here at school.

TERRIFIC TUESDAY 11-4-14

ASK ME ABOUT...
...the new activities during Free Choice time.
...what I did in Drama.
...what I did in Music.
...the new nursery rhyme we learned.
...what I learned about rainbows.
...the new password.
...the name of the new month.
...what is happening in the month of November.

FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
We introduced many new activities today for Free Choice time.

In the Construction Zone, we have pipe builders.  Children were making letters and numbers with them.  Then, they made a structure which they called an obstacle course.

At the Writing Station, children can practice writing the letters they have been learning in handwriting lessons.

At the Fine Motor Station, children can strengthen their fine motor muscles by transferring the rubber balls from one bowl to another using a tool we call a "grabber".

These boys counted the frogs they found in the counting basket.  There were 100!!

 DRAMA~
Be sure to ask your child what is happening in the photos below of today's Drama class.

 COLORS~
As part of our study of Colors, we read a book today about rainbows.  Be sure to ask your child what color is always at the top of the rainbow and what color is always at the bottom of the rainbow.  Ask your child when the best time is to look for a rainbow.  Children will have the opportunity to create their own rainbow during a Work Station at the Creation Station.

 NURSERY RHYME~
We introduced a new nursery rhyme today in the Book Nook with some interesting new vocabulary words!  Be sure to ask your child what a tuffet is!

EXTENDED DAY~
Our Discovery lesson today involved balance.  First, children had the opportunity to explore their own balance by walking on a taped line on the floor.

Next, working with a partner, children had to balance a ruler on top of a rectangle-shaped eraser.  It was interesting to watch their discoveries and problem-solving.  After they figured out how to do it, they had to guide the teacher in balancing her ruler on her eraser.

Next, children were given a penny and instructed to put the penny on top of the ruler on the number 12.  They were told to balance the ruler on top of the eraser without moving the penny.  With some guidance and encouragement to keep trying, the children determined that they had to move the eraser closer to the (penny) end of the rulerThey were then given more pennies to try to balance on their ruler.  We definitely used our scientific thinking today!
