THRILLING THURSDAY 11-7-13

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...the story, The Napping House.
...what I did in Music.
...what I did in Spanish.
...what 2 pictures I chose to draw that begin with letter "D".
... what solid color shirt I want to wear tomorrow for "Pre-K Color Day"!
...the ice cube experiment we are going to do tomorrow for Color Day.

LETTER SOUNDS~
Each child thought of and drew pictures of 2 objects beginning with the /D/ sound.  When finished with with their drawings, the students labeled their pictures.
 STORY~
We read the story, The Napping House, in Big Book form.  Following the story, the children shared a place where they would like to take a nap.  We will reread this story and then add it to our Book Nook with props for retelling.
 FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
Harper, Sophia, Kyndal and Walker work together to complete a floor puzzle.

EXPERIMENT~
To get ready for our Color Day tomorrow, we prepared an ice cube tray filled with water and food coloring (using the primary colors) and put it into the freezer.

Tomorrow, we will take out the ice cubes and put them into clear cups.  Each cup has stickers representing the colors of ice cubes that will go into that cup.  We will leave the cups of ice out throughout the morning.  At the end of our morning, we will check on our ice cubes to find out what has happened.  Stay tuned!

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 11-6-13

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what I did in P.E.
...what I did in Spanish.
...the name for our new pizza restaurant.
...what we did to create the menu for our restaurant.
...what peace means.
...the story, The Peace Rose.
...when and how we can use the peace rose.
...what Pre-K "A" and Pre-K "B" are doing to help a family with a mom, a dad, and a baby boy.

MATH ACTIVITY~
Yesterday Mrs. "B" introduced a hands-on addition activity that is now available in Math Magic.

 PEACE ROSE~
We asked the children to share with us what the word peace means.  After writing down their ideas, we read the book, The Peace Rose.    This story takes place in a classroom where children use a peace rose to resolve conflicts/problems that arise.  After reading the story, we introduced the peace roses that are now available to use in our classroom.  We modeled 2 different situations where the peace rose was used.  When a child is experiencing a problem/conflict with another child, he/she can retrieve the peace rose.  The child brings the peace rose to the child with whom there is a conflict and begins explaining what the problem is and how he/she feels.  The peace rose is then handed to the other child so he/she can have a turn to speak.  Once the conflict is explained and resolved, the 2 children grasp the rose together and say, "Friends".  They then carry the peace rose back to its vase.
We will be encouraging and supporting our Pre-K children to use the peace rose.  This allows them a way to practice and develop their communication skills and experience in resolving conflict.  It empowers them also--making them feel like they have a voice and how to express their feelings in an appropriate way.  We stressed to the children that if they are hurt by another child physically, they should immediately seek assistance from the teacher  (not use the peace rose).

WRITER'S WORKSHOP~
We brainstormed the menu for our new pizza place.  The children assisted us in writing the menu.  The children also suggested names for our restaurant.  After writing down all of the suggestions, the Friendly Frog randomly chose one.  The name of our pizza place is..... FIESTA!

PIZZA PLACE~
As we prepare to transform our Dramatic Play Station into a pizza place, we read the story, Pete's A Pizza.  Then, we made a chart, listing what each class member likes on his/her pizza.  We will use this chart in the Book Nook with a poem that the children can put together and read.
Each day this week, a different group of children is helping us get ready to "open" our pizza place.
