THRILLING THURSDAY 3-31-16

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what I did in Music/Drama.
...what I learned about space shuttles from the book, Liftoff!.
...the experiment we did.
...whose birthday we celebrated.

~OUTER SPACE~
At snack, children experienced what it would be like to eat like an astronaut in Outer Space.  They ate pudding using a straw.

We read a story about space shuttles and what happens to get them ready for a launch, to launch them, and then what happens when they are in Outer Space.
We did our own experiment to simulate a space shuttle blasting off.  A drinking straw was threaded through a piece of yarn.  The yarn was then attached from the ceiling to the floor.  The straw was the "space shuttle".  First, children shared their ideas about how to get the straw from the floor to the ceiling.  Then, the children were shown a balloon and they brainstormed ways to move the straw using the balloon.  Be sure to ask your child how we used the balloon to move the straw from the floor to the ceiling.  This experiment was a big hit!

 ~BIRTHDAY~
Today we helped Chi-Chi celebrate her March birthday.  Chi-Chi's mom read the story, It's A Firefly Night.  We then enjoyed eating cookies for Chi-Chi's birthday treat.  Happy Birthday, Chi-Chi!

~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was a swimming day!

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 3-30-16

ASK ME ABOUT...
...the new Work Stations we will be doing.
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...the story, Dogs In Space.
...what we did with our Buddies.
...our new "Star of the Week".
...what I did in Spanish.
...what I learned about the planet, Uranus.
...whose birthday we celebrated.

 ~NEW WORK STATIONS~
Today we started a new set of Work Stations!

At the Alphabet Station, children sort letters into 2 groups--consonants and vowels.
At the Writing Station, children are doing a rhyming flip book.
At the Fine Motor Station, children are completing a visual discrimination task.
At Math Magic, children are working with Geoboards.  Children will look at a card and transfer the figure they see on the card to the Geoboard using rubber bands.

At the Creation Station, children can choose from various art activities.

~BUDDIES~
Today we visited our Buddies for an Outer Space story and activity.  Ms. Saide, a second grade teacher, read the story, Dogs in Space.

After the story, Buddies worked together to complete some Space questions/riddles.

~FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
We LOVE when the children apply what they are learning to their daily lives.  Children could have 8 pretzels as part of their snack today.  Check out the photo below where one child put her pretzels into tally marks!
Earlier this week, we added some additional materials to the Construction Zone (rocks, wooden circles and trees).  The children have been very busy and creative using these materials in their constructions.

Lauren and Lucy work together with the new wooden shape puzzle we added to Math Magic.

Camille gets creative with the galaxy playdough.
 ~STAR OF THE WEEK~
Camille is our new Star of the Week!  Today we learned that Camille's favorite things include:  ice cream (favorite dessert); horses (favorite animal); and Ci Ci's house (favorite place to visit).  Camille shared many photos and her special Elsa wand.  We enjoyed getting to know you better, Camille!

 ~OUTER SPACE~
Today we read and learned more about the planet, Uranus.  Be sure to ask your child why Uranus is called, The Ice Planet; what scientists think happened to Uranus to make it spin on its side; and if Uranus is a gas planet or a rocky planet.
 ~BIRTHDAY~
Today we helped Gisele celebrate her March birthday.  Gisele's brother and mom read the story, Zoe's Room (No Sisters Allowed).  Then, we ate pudding (with Cool Whip) and fruit for Gisele's birthday treat.  Happy Birthday, Gisele!

~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was a Discovery Day.  We watched an Outer Space show called,  "The Magic School Bus Gets Lost In Outer Space".

...what I learned about Saturn.
...how Saturn and Jupiter are similar.
...what the Dramatic Play will turn into next week.

~LETTER GROUPS~

 ~OUTER SPACE~
Today we read a book about Saturn and learned some facts about it.  Saturn has more than 60 moons, is covered in gases, and takes almost 30 years to orbit the Sun one time.
 ~ALPHABET BOOK~
Today we did the "G" page for our Alphabet Memory Book.  Be sure to ask your child what he/she drew that begins with the /G/ sound.  Children also labeled their pictures.

~EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was a Cooking Day and we made banana bread!  Children helped mash the bananas and measure and mix the ingredients.  Most children enjoyed eating the finished product for snack.  Some children even had 2 slices!
