TERRIFIC TUESDAY 5-20-14

OUTDOOR FREE CHOICE~
We added bubbles in the sensory tub and a sight word hopscotch to our Outdoor Week activities today. 








HANDWRITING~
Children learned and practice writing number 9 today in their handwriting books.

LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY~
Today we read the story, Gotta Go!  Gotta Go!, which explains how a caterpillar has an instinct to migrate to Mexico for the winter.  We then announced that it was time for our own butterflies to go and took our butterfly garden outside and released them.  The children cheered as they watched our little friends fly away!

MARVELOUS MONDAY 5-19-14

 We had BEAUTIFUL weather for our first day of Outdoor Week!  We spent Free Choice time outside today, complete with activities that included, playing in the sand box, painting, riding on scooters, building with cardboard panels, drawing with sidewalk chalk, playing on the playground equipment, throwing/catching balls, and relaxing in a wading pool while looking at books!

THRILLING THURSDAY 5-15-14

HANDWRITING~
Today the children learned and practiced writing number 8.
 LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY~
We had a surprise this morning!  Sabrina emerged from her chrysalis and is now a butterfly!!!!
 We reviewed what we have learned about butterflies and moths doing a Venn Diagram activity.  We used different pictures that were characteristics of butterflies and moths.  Each child was given a picture (characteristic) and had to determine if it belonged to a butterfly, a moth, or both.






 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!~
Today we celebrated Owen's summer birthday!  Owen's family read some of their favorite Shel Silverstein poems.  Then, we ate yummy butterfly sugar cookies for Owen's birthday treat!  Happy Birthday, Owen!

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY 5-14-14

LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY~
As a follow-up to our lesson on symmetry, children had the opportunity to create symmetrical butterfly wings today using crayon shavings and a wax paper butterfly. 




This was a WONDERFUL story about butterflies.  Be sure to ask your child why a butterfly is patient.  The book also mentions that a butterfly is spectacular.  Ask your child what spectacular means!
ZERO THE HERO!~
We celebrated our 160th day of school today and our last Zero the Hero day!  Harper's family, Walker's family and Willa's family provided us with a great activity--decorating our own Zero the Hero capes!  Thank you for helping us celebrate with a fun and memorable activity!

HANDWRITING~ 
Children learned and practiced how to write numbers 6 and 7 today in their handwriting books.
LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY~
Today we learned and discussed the similarities and differences between moths and butterflies.

First, we looked at a drawings of a butterfly and a moth.  Ask your child to use the photo below to share with you what he/she learned.
 Next, we used the visuals below to learn more about how butterflies and moths are the same and different.
 After our discussion, we removed the pieces from our visual aid and gave 1 piece to each child.  Each child then had a turn to put his/her piece back on the board in the correct place.  Your children are becoming butterfly and moth experts!
