ASK ME ABOUT...
...how my frog card (the one I turn over when I enter the classroom) is different.
...what I did in P.E.
...what letter I learned and practiced writing.
...what letter sound we did.
...what we used to decorate the letter "P".
...what I learned about Martin Luther King, Jr.
...what I learned about magnets.
...the snowman poem we learned.
LAST NAMES~
When children enter the room and turn over their frog card, they now have to search for their last name instead of their first name!

 HANDWRITING~
Today children learned and worked on writing letter "A".

SOUND LESSON~
Today we discussed the letter sound /P/.  We made a "human blending board"!
We decorated the letter "P" with puzzle pieces.

 DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.~
Today we read a story and had a discussion about Martin Luther King, Jr.  We explained that Dr. King tried to get laws/rules changed so that everyone was treated fairly.  He was also someone who tried to help others and tried to teach people to be kind and helpful to everyone.  Tomorrow, we will get together with our 2nd grade buddies to do a special activity to help others.  Stay tuned!
 MAGNETS~
Today we read a story and experimented with finding magnetic objects in our classroom.

As a follow-up activity, children will separate magnetic and non-magnetic items that are mixed in the Sensory Tub.

 SNOWMAN POEM~
We introduced a snowman poem that the children can do on the pocket chart in the Book Nook.  There will be a follow-up activity to do with the poem with our Work Stations which will begin later this week.

 EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today during lunch, Columbus Academy students were treated to some musical selections by members of the Ohio State Alumni Band.  Go Bucks!

Today was a Cooking Day!  To begin, we read a story about snow and snowflakes.  Be sure to ask your child how snow is good for people, good for animals and good for plants.
After the story, the children were shown how to fold a coffee filter (3 times) and then how to make cuts to create a snowflake.

After making paper snowflakes, we folded tortillas and made edible snowflakes!  After cutting the tortilla, children unfolded; "painted" on melted butter; and then sprinkled it with sugar/cinnamon and/or powdered sugar.  After "baking" in the oven for a short time, the children ate their snowflake.  These were a big hit!

SOUND REVIEW~
Today we reviewed all of the letter sounds we have done so far.  One way we practiced was forming the letter in the sand as we made the sound the letter makes.
 FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
As a follow-up to the story, Snowballs, children are creating their own snowman from recycled materials.  These will be on display in our classroom.

At Math Magic, children can put numbers on snowmen in order from 0 through 30.

 WINTER!~
Today we read a book about snow that was filled with rhyming words and lots of fun in the snow!

We had some busy artists today for our "Winter Wonderland" bulletin board.  Children designed the pieces to make our Winter Wonderland including snowflakes, hockey players, pine trees, sleds, and snowmen.

MAKE-UP ZERO THE HERO DAY!~
Yesterday was suppose to be our 80th day of school!  Since it was a "snow day" yesterday, Mitch and his mom helped us celebrate today!  The children each made their own snowman/snowwoman/snowperson.  Thank you for this fun activity!
 WINTER~
We read the story Snowballs today by Lois Ehlert.  In the story, children save a variety of materials to use when the first snow falls and they can build snowmen.
As a follow-up activity to the story, each Pre-K child will create his/her own snowperson (or snowanimal) using items and materials that have been recycled and saved by the teachers.

 DRAMA~
One activity the children did in Drama today was to act out different winter/snow activities while the other children in the class tried to guess what was being acted out.

 FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
We introduced many new activities today for use during Free Choice time.

At the Discovery Station, children can build a snowflake using a picture.

At Math Magic, children can create patterns with tiny snowflakes, snowmen and peppermints.

Also at Match Magic, the children can count the number of items in the counting basket.  Amara, Scarlett and Anna discovered there were 100 items!
Also at Match Magic, children can do the "Add and Cover" activity.  After rolling the dice, the child counts or adds together the number of dots on each die.  He/She then colors in the corresponding number on his/her paper.

EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
We made snow playdough today!  We measured and mixed the ingredients (including something to make it smell good) and then the teachers cooked the playdough on the stove.  When the playdough cooled, the children added silver and white glitter  and "kneaded it" into the playdough.

The children made a snowman face on the top of the container that will store their snow playdough.

 Playing with our snow playdough!
