FANTASTIC FRIDAY 10-3-14

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what I did in P.E.
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what new letter sound we did.
...what we used to decorate the letter "O".
...the story, The Crayon Box That Talked.
...what I did in handwriting.

AMAZING PRE-K AUTHORS~
We are thrilled to see the children's interest in creating books!  Once a child completes a book, he/she has the opportunity to share it with classmates and will then bring it home to share with family.  Please have your child return his/her book to school in the plastic sleeve with the green note pictured below.  We have a special folder for your child to keep his/her books in at school.

LETTER SOUND~
Today we talked about the letter sound /O/ (the short /O/ sound).   Each child glued an octopus on our letter "O".

We brainstormed words that begin with the short /O/ sound or have the short /O/ sound.

We also wrote down words that have the short /O/ sound but are spelled with "au" and also words that have the long /O/ sound.

STORYTIME~
Be sure to ask your child about the story, The Crayon Box That Talked.  Ask your child to tell you if it was a true story or an imaginary/pretend story (fiction).  Also ask your child why he/she thinks the author wrote this book!

HANDWRITING~
Today children reviewed and practiced making lines from top to bottom and left to right.  They also learned and practiced making the letter "L".

EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today was a Cooking Day!  After reading the story, The Cajun Cornbread Boy, we made cornbread muffins from scratch!

The cornbread muffins received a "thumbs up"!

THRILLING THURSDAY 10-12-14

ASK ME ABOUT...
...what I did in Spanish.
...what an author does.
...my writing folder.
...what I did in Music.
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...how many days we've been in school.
...what we did to celebrate Zero the Hero day.
 PRE-K AUTHORS~
Today we discussed what authors do.  The children came up with answers including:
~Authors write books.
~Authors write stories.
~Authors make pictures in books. (We explained that sometimes an author is also the illustrator for a book.)

We then took a look at a book we read recently and discussed what we noticed on the front cover (i.e. words (the title or name of the book), pictures of things we would see inside the book, and the author and illustrator's names.  We then examined the inside of the book and noticed words and pictures.

Next, we asked the children if they would like to be authors.  We then showed them blank books that are available in the Writing Station for them to create books.

Each child has his/her own writing folder that is kept in his/her mailbox.  On the inside of the folder are two pockets--one for books the child is working on (the green dot side) and one for completed books (the red dot side).

When a child completes a book at the Writing Station, he she puts it in the Author Bucket.  We set aside time in our day for an author to choose whether or not he/she wants to share his/her completed story with the class.
Finally, a child can choose to bring home his/her book to share with family.  AFTER YOUR CHILD SHARES HIS/HER BOOK WITH YOU,  PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD RETURN  HIS/HER BOOK TO SCHOOL TO KEEP IN HIS/HER WRITING FOLDER/PORTFOLIO.
We had many authors visit the Writing Station today!

FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
The veterinarian's office was quite busy today!

 STORYTIME~
Ask me about the pattern in this book.

ZERO THE HERO DAY!~
Today we celebrated our 30th day of school!
Today we counted the frogs on our ten-frames and got to 30.  We also talked about a quicker way to count the frogs (counting by 10's).

Scarlett and her dad helped us celebrate Zero the Hero Day by making a number 30 with the number 3 and a pumpkin for the 0.  Thank you for helping us celebrate!
EXTENDED DAY PRE-K~
Today children visited the Art Room for painting, drawing and sculpting activities.
