TERRIFIC TUESDAY 10-16-12

WORK STATIONS~
Today we introduced some new tasks that are required to be completed by the children during "Work Station" time.

The activity in the photos below is at "Math Magic".  For this task, children color a 2-sided pumpkin (1 side is green and the other side is orange).  Next, children flip the pumpkin and indicate on the graph with a sticker if the pumpkin landed on the green or the orange side.

When assigned to the "Alphabet Station", children complete a "Rainbow Words" book.  Inside the book are the first 5 passwords we have had.  For each password, the child traces it with a highlighter 3 times using a different color each time.  The child is to say each letter as he/she highlights it and then the word when he/she is finished.

Yesterday, we read the story, Pumpkin Circle.  When they visit the Discovery Station during Work Stations, children will recreate the life cycle of a pumpkin.

FREE CHOICE~
Yesterday and today, we introduced new Free Choice activities at the various stations.

The Dramatic Play Station is now a Pizza Place!

At the Sensory Tub, children search for the letters "P" and "O" in the popcorn kernels.  Once they find the letters, they can practice spelling our password this week--"pop"!

At the Fine Motor Station, Collier is scooping the pumpkin candies from the bowl into the pumpkin ice cube tray.
Sophia and Josh are engaged in another fine motor activity...putting pennies into the slot on the piggy bank.

Lily is threading pipe cleaners through the holes of a colander.

The children in the photos below are enjoying putty at the Fine Motor Station.

In the Construction Zone, children can build/create with large foam pattern blocks.

London builds a tower with the color blocks, also located in the Construction Zone.
PRE-K AUTHORS!~
We are requiring all the children to visit the Writing Station during Work Station or Free Choice time to create a Halloween story called, What Do I See On Halloween?.  Once children complete the illustrations in the story, a teacher assists them with writing the words.  DO NOT PANIC when your child brings home his/her book to share with you and you see words which are spelled incompletely or incorrectly in the book.  We are assisting the children in spelling the words phonetically.  In other words, they are writing the letters they hear.  For some children, they only hear the beginning sound.  Some children hear beginning, middle, and/or ending sounds.  They may or may not be in the right order.  This is developmentally appropriate and what we are teaching them.

Once a child completes his/her story, he/she puts the story into our "Author Basket".  Then, when we have time, we have children take turns reading/sharing their book with the class.  Children then will bring home their book to share with their family.  Please remind your child to bring his/her book back to school as we have a special portfolio for each child to keep the books/stories he/she creates this year at the Writing Station.
