COLORS~
Yesterday we read a book about rainbows and discussed different facts about rainbows--the order of the colors; when is the best time to see a rainbow; how a rainbow works.   Next week, the children will have the opportunity to create their own rainbows.
MORNING MESSAGE~
Today's Morning Message was missing a word.  The children gave suggestions on what word we could use to fill in the blank and it was decided to be "Hola".
Morgan, today's Friendly Frog, reads the morning message on her own!

FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
Emily uses the wooden handwriting pieces to form the letters of  her name.

 Hispanic Heritage Month~
Jean-Luc's mom visited our classroom and she and Jean-Luc shared with us about a Caribbean island, the Dominican Republic.  They shared some wonderful information and photos about the culture and traditions of this island.  Thank you!!!

We learned about a popular fruit in the Dominican Republic, a mango.
Jean-Luc is holding a starfish from the Dominican Republic.

Jean-Luc's mom showed us a coconut and shared how they drink and eat coconut in the Dominican Republic.
CAMPFIRE~
The children helped us compose and write a thank-you note to the Lower School Librarians expressing our appreciation for the campfire.

THRILLING THURSDAY 10-24-13

...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...our trip to the campfire.
...our new "Star of the Week".
...what I learned about rainbows.

STAR OF THE WEEK~
Our "Star of the Week" is August!  We learned that August's favorite color is red; favorite dessert is cherry cordial ice cream; and favorite activity is to feed the animals on his farm.  August also shared a medal he received for chasing chickens!  Thank you for sharing more about yourself with us, August!

CAMPFIRE~
We had a great time at the campfire today.  Our Lower School Librarians, Ms. Oeth and Mrs. Arner,  told stories while we tried to stay warm around the campfire.  Then, our 2nd grade buddies roasted marshmallows for the delicious s'mores we enjoyed.  The hot chocolate we drank also helped us to stay warm!

At Math Magic, children choose a number card and color in the corresponding number of apples on the tree.  They continue to choose cards and color in the apples until they have colored in all 100 apples.

We decorated our letter "C" with cupcakes.
"LITTLE MISS MUFFET"~
Today we introduced another nursery rhyme, "Little Miss Muffet".  We discussed new vocabulary words such as, tuffet, curds, and frightened. Children easily identified rhyming words they heard.  We also acted out the nursery rhyme which the children really enjoyed.

...the class book we are going to make called, Please Don't Quit!.

CLASS BOOK~
Today we reviewed the story we read yesterday,
The Day the Crayons Quit.   Now, we are going to do a class book as an extension activity to this story.  Our class book will be called, Please Don't Quit.  To begin our book, each child completed the following sentence:
Dear  (child chooses a color), Please do not quit.  I need you when I want to draw a (child's choice of any object).  Next week, the children will illustrate a page to correspond to their sentence.  Once all the pages are completed, we will compile it into a book.

 FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
At the Alphabet Station, children can practice their recognition of the color words by matching the appropriate picture to the sentence.

Below is a maze where you follow the lower case letters in order to get through the "maze".
At the Alphabet Station, children match the beginning letter/sound to a picture.
We have been learning how to use the SMARTBoard.  It is now open to use during Free Choice time.  Currently, there is a letter sound activity to do.
Carsyn and Sophia practice making their names with the wooden pieces we use with our handwriting program.

At the Discovery Station, children explore and experiment with mixing primary colors.
We decorated our letter "B" with Band-aids!
 ANOTHER MO WILLEMS' BOOK!
Today we enjoyed the newest book, just released, from Mo Willems!  Be sure to ask your child about the story, I Am A Frog!.

MARVELOUS MONDAY 10-21-13

ASK ME ABOUT...
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what I did in P.E.
...what I did in Spanish.
...the story, The Paperboy.
...the mixing color activity Mrs. Spolter did.
...our new password.
...what we used to decorate our letter "P".
...the story, The Day the Crayons Quit!

WRITER'S WORKSHOP~
As we explained previously, we are in the "Talking" phase of our Writer's Workshop.  This is where we read a story (that could be true) and then relate a personal story of our own.  Today's story was The Paperboy.  We discussed the silver award that is on the cover of this book--the Caldecott Award--given to a book for its illustrations.  Ask your child to share this story with you, including what time of day the story occured; who accompanied the paperboy on his route; and what the paperboy did when he finished delivering the papers.  After the story, Mrs. Spolter shared about a member of her family who was a paperboy.

*We also discussed that the word, "paperboy" is a compound word.
FREE CHOICE~
We added a new book to our Book Nook--a Pre-K Picture Dictionary--which includes photos of classmates and pictures from our alphabet chart.  The children are excited that they can read this dictionary!

We glued puzzle pieces on our letter "P"!

 COLORS~
Today we read the book The Day the Crayons Quit!  Be sure to ask your child why the orange and yellow crayon were mad at each other and not speaking to one another.  Fortunately, the story has a happy ending!

Following our color story, we showed the children a mixing color activity that will be available for them to use at the Discovery Station during Free Choice time.  Using colored water (primary colors), children can use droppers and mix the colored water into the tray to make new colors.
