TERRIFIC TUESDAY 2-12-13

NEW WORK STATIONS~
At MATH MAGIC, children are cutting out numbers and gluing them in the correct order.  They do these in "groups of ten" (e.g. 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc.).  We are requiring the students to do up to 30.  They may choose to go further, working up to 100.  If your child reaches 100, then he/she will bring home his/her completed number strip (1-100) along with a special note explaining games to do with the number strip.

At GAMES GALORE, children are doing a number activity.  During his/her turn, the child chooses 2 number tiles and puts them together.  He/she identifies the number and then each child colors in the number on his/her own 100 chart.

At the ALPHABET STATION, children are using Wikki Sticks to "spell" words from our Word Wall.  Each child is asked to do 3 words.  Once the 3 words have been formed, the child takes a white piece of paper, places it over the Wikki Stick Words and rubs a crayon over it.   The word then appears on the white paper.  (Sorry we didn't get a photo of this last part.)

Yesterday, we asked each child to share with us what he/she things love is.  We then had the children illustrate their idea.  We are going to compile these ideas into a class book.   At the WRITING STATION, children cup apart the words to their idea and then glue them in order on to their illustration.

At the FINE MOTOR STATION, children cut out 4 different pictures and glue them in the correct order on another page, to explain the story.

At the OVERHEAD STATION, children play a game of "Connect Four" by identifying our previous passwords.
At the BOOK NOOK, children have to find certain words in the nursery rhymes hanging in our Book Nook.  Once a word is found, children cover it with a piece of highlighting tape.

 CLASS BOOK~
Our class book about what we like to do in Winter has been officially "published" and is now available for our reading pleasure in our class Book Nook.
FREE CHOICE LEARNING~
London and David busy at the light table.

 OUTER SPACE~
Today, we introduced our new theme....."Outer Space". We began by making a chart of things we know about Outer Space  (all answers were accepted regardless of whether or not they were true or false).  Next, we will make a chart of things we want to learn or know about Outer Space.  We will add to this chart as we progress through our learning about Outer Space.  Finally, when we finish our study of this topic, we will make a final chart of what we learned  (this will include going back to our original list and changing any idea that might have been false).  We're ready to "blast off" with our learning!

Pre-K Hat Day!

Happy Hat Day!

FREE CHOICE~
Lily's creation with the "indoor snowballs".
Will copies a design from a picture on to the cork board with wooden shapes, nails, and a hammer.  A great spatial reasoning activity!
 HANDWRITING~
We have learned hot to correctly write the numbers 1 through 10!  We will continue to practice writing numbers correctly for the duration of the school year.

 STAR OF THE WEEK~
We learned more about our friend, Jon, today--the new "Star of the Week"!  Jon's favorite things include the color red, eating at Subway, eating popsicles for dessert, and drawing.  Jon also shared his photos with us and a special airplane.  Thank you for sharing with us today, Jon!
 STORY~
This was a great read-aloud today!  Be sure to ask your child what the hippo in the story learned about giving hugs!

 HIPPOPOTAMUS~
Today we looked at the word hippopotamus to count how many letters are in this long word.  One child raised his hand and commented that he saw one of our "popcorn words" in the word.  It was the word "pop".  Then other children noticed more words that were inside the word hippopotamus, including:   "hip", "pot", "am", and "us".  We are becoming great readers!
 "HUMPTY DUMPTY"~
Our new nursery rhyme is "Humpty Dumpty".  It has been added to the pocket chart in the Book Nook as well as to our Nursery Rhyme Journals.
